Abstract:

Thermoplastics and their short glass reinforced composites are being increasingly used, particularly in the automotive industry. The capability to be molded in complex geometries, low manufacturing cost, and high production rate are among the advantages of applications of these materials. Many components in such applications are under cyclic loading and, therefore, understanding their fatigue behaviour is essential for their failure and life estimation analyses. This presentation provides an overview of fatigue behaviour of these materials with respect to a variety of effects. These include effects of anisotropy, fibre length and orientation, stress ratio or mean stress, cycling frequency and self-heating, humidity, temperature, stress concentration, thermo-mechanical fatigue and creep-fatigue interactions, damage mechanism, and stress multiaxiality. The presentation includes experimental data, as well as predictive models for the aforementioned effects. Test data from several common thermoplastics tested at different temperatures, different R ratios, and loaded in different directions will be presented. Similarities and differences with metal fatigue behaviour and analysis methods will also be highlighted.
