Weitere Informationen: In-depth analysis of crack growth has known a large increase of interest using 3D analysis as provided by in-situ testing like X-ray tomography. Simultaneously, 3D finite element analysis of crack growth has become possible by explicit methods as level-set, conform remeshing or cohesive zone models. This paper will focus on the analysis of fatigue crack growth accounting either for realistic meshing of complex pores geometry (cast Al-alloy) as well as for relevant model of complex 3D crack shape (forged Ti-alloy). For both cases we will discuss the gain of such explicit model on the fatigue crack initiation and growth modelling and the definition of new criterion. At last but not least, the amazing possibilities of detailed description of crack to microstructure interactions lead to the question of the relevancy of such complex models. This issue will be discussed comparing the respective interest of the different length scale of analysis that could be used to describe crack growth.
